In the beginning...

Pre-1960s — Background
The Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de’ Ricci were founded in 1880 in Glens Falls, New York, by Lucy Eaton Smith (Mother Catherine de’ Ricci). Their mission: to conduct spiritual retreats for women and promote renewal of faith through prayer and reflection.
Many Sisters arrived in Florida after being expelled from Cuba following the 1959 revolution.
1961 — Dedication of the Dominican Retreat House
December 1961: The Dominican Retreat House in Pinecrest, FL, was blessed by Bishop Coleman F. Carroll. The 12-acre property featured 40 private rooms and a chapel space.

1960s–1980s — Retreat Ministry
The Dominican Sisters hosted women’s and clergy retreats, faith-formation programs, and ministered to Cuban refugees and local parishes.

1990s–Early 2000s — Final Years Under the Dominican Sisters
The retreat house remained active, listed in Archdiocesan directories, and served the community for over 40 years.
2004 — Transition to Archdiocese
In May 2004, the property was conveyed to the Archdiocese of Miami. MorningStar Renewal Center was founded, expanding the retreat mission to families, clergy, and lay leaders.

2004–Present — MorningStar Renewal Center
MorningStar's Ministry Director is Sue Deferrari and she continues its mission at Pinecrest, offering spiritual retreats, faith-based workshops, and community renewal programs.
“Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, MorningStar Renewal Center is a place of spiritual renewal, faith formation, and ministry action.

🕯️ Legacy
Though the name and ownership have changed, the purpose remains — a sacred space for quiet, prayer, and renewal in South Florida for over six decades.
